As I look back on the year 2023, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude and amazement. Why, you ask? Because I achieved a goal that, in March 2022, I would not have believed possible - swimming a total of 200 kilometers in the next year. This monumental swimming journey has not only been a personal triumph but has also taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, growth, and the power of setting ambitious goals.

200km swimming in 2023 of Gaurav Parashar, Gurgaon - 17 September 2023

From Novice to 200 Kilometers

My obsession with swimming began as a tentative step into uncharted waters. In March 2022, I was a beginner, barely comfortable in the water. The idea of swimming 200 kilometers within a single year seemed nothing short of a fantasy. But I decided to dive headfirst into this challenge, both figuratively and literally.

I embarked on a journey of learning, training, and dedication. Every lap in the pool became a stroke closer to my goal. I engaged a coach via Cultfit (then Fitso) to refine my technique, set achievable milestones, and steadily increased my swimming distance each week. The water became my sanctuary, and every swim was a step toward conquering my doubts and limitations.

A Paradigm for Personal Growth

Beyond the kilometers swum, this endeavor became a powerful metaphor for life itself. Swimming taught me that even the most daunting goals can be achieved with perseverance and dedication. It became a reminder that the only limits that truly matter are the ones we set for ourselves.

As I pushed my boundaries in the pool, I realized that the principles of learning, growth, and resilience could be applied to any aspect of life. Swimming became a grounding experience, offering paradigms for tackling challenges, learning new skills, and embracing personal transformation.

Upcoming Challenge of Winter Swimming

While the summer months provided ideal conditions for my swimming journey, the arrival of winter in Gurgaon will pose a new set of challenges. Even with indoor heated pools, the temptation to stay warm and dry rather than plunge into chilly waters is hard to resist.

Winter swimming requires mental fortitude, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to one's goals. It will become a test of my determination as I try to brave the cold to continue my swimming regimen in the rest of 2023. Each stroke will become a testament to my dedication.

Gratitude for the Journey

As the year draws to a close, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Swimming 200 kilometers in 2023 was not just about covering a distance; it was a transformative journey that reshaped my perspective on what I am capable of achieving. It reaffirmed that the pursuit of ambitious goals can lead to personal growth, resilience, and a profound sense of fulfillment.

So, as I reflect on this incredible year of swimming, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons learned, the barriers broken, and the uncharted waters navigated. Swimming has become more than just a physical activity; it's a metaphor for life itself, reminding me that the only limits that truly matter are the ones we set for ourselves.

As I look ahead, I'm excited to see where this journey will lead me next, both in and out of the water. Here's to the incredible journey of 2023, and to the adventures that lie ahead in 2024 and beyond!

Swimming has always been a passion of mine for the last 1.5 years now, but I wanted to push my boundaries and challenge myself like never before. A half marathon swim, which is equivalent to 5 kilometers, seemed like the perfect test of my endurance, technique, and mental strength. It's not just about the distance; it's about staying focused and determined as you slice through the water for hours on end.

Preparation and Training

Preparing for a half marathon swim is no small feat. It requires months of rigorous trainingin the pool. I followed a structured training plan that gradually increased the distance I swam each week. I also focused on improving my stroke efficiency and breathing technique to conserve energy during the long swim.

Additionally, mental preparation is crucial. If you can visualize yourself conquering each kilometer and practice mental strategies to stay calm and focused when fatigue sets in, you can do it too. It's not just a physical battle; it's a game of mental strength.

The Big Day Swimming 5K

I had decided that I will do 5km swim today and my mind had already started playing games with me while I drove to the pool. As I entered the water, excitement and nerves coursed through me. The first few kilometers went by smoothly, and I felt strong and confident. But as I reached the halfway point, I could feel some physical and mental challenges. The sensation of being underwater for almost two hours is unlike anything else. It's a mix of exhilaration and fatigue, a battle between determination and doubt. Every stroke became a testament to my training and resolve. With each breath, I drew strength from within to keep going.

When I finally touched the finish line after 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 13 seconds, a rush of emotions washed over me. I had not only completed the 5K swim, but I had also achieved a personal best time. It was a moment of triumph that I cherish.

Filling up our petrol tank is a routine task we often take for granted. We pull into a petrol station, swipe our cards or hand over cash, and expect to receive the correct amount of fuel for our payment. However, recent incidents of frauds and overbilling at petrol pumps have made it clear that we can no longer be complacent when it comes to fueling up our vehicles. Yesterday, I avoided overbilling at a petrol pump nearby and I am writing to explain why it's crucial to stay vigilant to protect your hard-earned money.

The Growing Concern - Fraud and Overbilling

Fuel pump frauds and overbilling have become a growing concern for consumers across the globe. This deceptive practice occurs when petrol pump attendants manipulate the fuel dispensing meters or inflate the billed amount, resulting in customers paying more than they should for their fuel. While this problem has been around for a while, it seems to persist despite various preventive measures.

Why Vigilance is Crucial

Yesterday, I had a personal encounter with this issue that highlighted the importance of vigilance when refueling. As I pulled into Modern Fuels, Petrol Pump, Bharat Petroleum and tapped my card to pay for the fuel, I was initially oblivious to the potential threat of overbilling. However, something didn't seem right, and my gut feeling told me to be cautious. After receiving the nozzle and filling my tank, I asked for the bill. To my surprise, the amount on the bill was significantly higher than what I had expected. I immediately realized that I was a victim of overbilling. Without hesitation, I asked for the manager of the petrol pump to come and discuss the matter.

Frauds at Modern Fuels, Petrol Pump, Bharat Petroleum, 14 September 2023

Taking Action Against Fraud

Upon the manager's arrival, I calmly explained the situation, emphasizing that I had been overcharged for my fuel. I also mentioned that I had observed some suspicious behavior from the staff during the refueling process. The manager was understanding and promptly reviewed the situation. It was evident that the pump attendant had overbilled. This unethical behavior was not only a breach of trust but also a violation of the law.

Protecting Yourself from Fuel Pump Frauds

While my incident had a positive outcome, not every situation may be resolved as easily. To protect yourself from fuel pump frauds and overbilling, here are some essential tips:

1. Stay Vigilant: Pay close attention to the fuel meter while refueling. Ensure it starts from zero and stops promptly when you finish.

2. Ask for a Bill: Always ask for a printed bill, even if you're using a tap-to-pay card. Verify the amount on the bill before leaving the petrol station.

3. Use Tap-to-Pay Cards with Caution: While tap-to-pay cards offer convenience, they can also make it easier for fraudsters to overbill you. Always double-check the amount charged.

4. Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice anything unusual or suspicious behavior at the petrol pump, report it to the station manager or contact the authorities if necessary.

Fuel pump frauds and overbilling are issues that affect consumers globally. As I experienced firsthand, vigilance is your best defense against falling victim to these scams. Remember to be attentive when filling up your tank, ask for a bill, and review your payment statements. By staying alert and informed, you can protect your wallet and contribute to a safer and more honest refueling experience for all.

Our smartphones have become an indispensable part of our lives, housing a plethora of apps designed to simplify and enhance various aspects of our daily routine. However, over time, our smartphones can become cluttered with an overwhelming number of apps, each vying for our attention. As an entrepreneur, I've realized the importance of streamlining my digital life to stay focused and productive. Yesterday, I cleaned up my phone, removing a significant number of apps, and how this process will help me narrow my focus.

Cleaning House - From 110 to 40 Apps

One day, I decided it was time to take a long, hard look at my smartphone and the multitude of apps it housed. I was astonished to find that I had accumulated a staggering 110 apps over the last year. This realization was a wake-up call. I realized that many of these apps served little to no purpose in my daily life. It was time for a digital detox.

The process of decluttering your phone is liberating. I quickly evaluated each app's usefulness and relevance, and if an app didn't serve a significant purpose, it had to go. After filling an Excel sheet, I removed 70 out of the 110 apps, leaving me with a leaner and more focused set of 40 apps.

Symbolism in Decluttering

This process of cleaning up my phone goes beyond just digital organization; it's symbolic of narrowing my focus and simplifying my life. Much like an entrepreneur must prioritize tasks and goals to be successful, I realized that I needed to prioritize the apps and digital distractions in my life. By decluttering my phone, I'm actively choosing to concentrate on what truly matters to me.

A Year Without Notifications

Around a year ago, I made another significant change in my smartphone habits: I turned off notifications for most apps. This decision was a game-changer. No longer was my attention constantly hijacked by the incessant pings and buzzes from various apps. I felt a newfound sense of control over my device, allowing me to choose when and where I wanted to engage with my apps.

Rising Standards: The Quality of Apps

One noticeable change throughout my journey of app cleaning is the remarkable improvement in the quality of apps available. The bar has been set much higher, with developers constantly striving to deliver user-friendly, feature-rich apps that genuinely enhance our lives. The process of cleaning up my phone has allowed me to discover and appreciate these high-quality apps even more.

Cleaning up my phone, removing redundant apps, and eliminating notifications has been a transformative experience. It has not only simplified my digital life but also symbolized my commitment to narrowing my focus as an entrepreneur. The quality of apps available today has made this transition smoother, enabling me to work smarter and more efficiently. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the clutter of smartphone apps, I encourage you to embark on your own digital detox journey. You might be surprised at the positive impact it can have on your life and business.

After a prolonged hiatus from my daily routine, it's a refreshing feeling to get back to the usual life. I find myself eagerly looking forward to resuming regular activities like swimming and engaging in 5km runs a couple of times a week. I also intend to huddle together and reorient myself towards work.

The Joy of Swimming

Swimming has lately been a favorite activity of mine. The cool water against my skin, the rhythmic strokes, and the sense of weightlessness create an unparalleled sense of relaxation. Gurgaon offers a range of swimming pools, both public and private, where enthusiasts like me can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of swimming. I look forward to the soothing laps in the pool, which have been dearly missed during these challenging times.

Rediscovering the Runner's High

For avid runners, there's nothing quite like the thrill of a good run. Whether it's the brisk morning air or the sense of accomplishment after completing a run, there's a unique high that comes with this exercise. It's a great way to not only stay fit but also explore the beauty of the city.

Home - A Sanctuary of Comfort

Amidst all the excitement of returning to my fitness routine, home remains a constant source of comfort. Over the past year, it has transformed into a multifaceted space that accommodates work, relaxation, and recreation. The familiarity of home, the cozy corner where I curl up with a book, and the aroma of home-cooked meals are irreplaceable. In a world that's constantly changing, home remains a sanctuary of stability and comfort.

Travel isn't just about leisure; it's about gaining new perspectives, fostering creativity, and recharging the soul. It's a necessary investment in personal and professional growth.

The Necessity of Travel

Yet, these adventures in Jordan and Nepal have reinforced the notion that travel is an essential part of life. It opens our eyes to diverse cultures, fuels our curiosity, and enriches our understanding of the world. It reminds us that there is so much more to discover beyond our everyday routines.

September's adventures in Jordan and Nepal have left me with a newfound perspective and vision. They have emphasized the importance of making time for travel, despite the challenges that may arise. Each journey, whether long or short, is an opportunity to expand our horizons, connect with new people, and deepen our appreciation for the beauty of the world. As I return to the entrepreneur's world with renewed energy and insight, I am grateful for the invaluable lessons these trips have imparted.

As my Jordanian adventure came to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible experiences, mesmerizing sights, and unforgettable flavors that had filled my days in this captivating country. The time had come to bid farewell to the rose-red city of Petra and the warm hospitality of Jordan. I took the flight back from Amman to Delhi via Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airlines.

The Flight Back

My return journey commenced from Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, where I boarded an Etihad Airlines flight bound for Abu Dhabi. I took a break at the Marhaba Plaza Premium Lounge and grabbed a quick bite.

An Unexpected Medical Incident

The leg of my journey from Abu Dhabi to Delhi was eventful in an unexpected way. During the flight, a senior citizen, a 68-year-old gentleman from Bokaro, who happened to be seated right behind me, suddenly lost consciousness. Concerned for his well-being, I immediately alerted the cabin crew and asked for medical assistance. The swift response from the Etihad Airlines staff was commendable. They promptly provided oxygen to the passenger and conducted a thorough medical assessment to determine the cause of his condition. It was a reminder of the importance of well-trained airline staff in handling in-flight medical emergencies.

Tips for Older Passengers on Staying Healthy In-flight

  1. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can exacerbate health issues during flights. Older passengers should drink plenty of water before and during the flight to stay well-hydrated.

  2. Eat Well: It's essential to consume nutritious meals before and during the flight. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can lead to discomfort.

  3. Medications and Health History: Carry essential medications in your cabin bag, and ensure the cabin crew is aware of any pre-existing medical conditions. It's advisable to have a doctor's note with you if you have specific health concerns.

  4. Exercise in Your Seat: Simple in-seat exercises like ankle circles, knee lifts, and shoulder rolls can improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.

  5. Communicate with Cabin Crew: Don't hesitate to communicate with the cabin crew if you feel unwell during the flight. They are trained to handle medical emergencies and can provide immediate assistance.

  6. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies to ensure you have access to necessary healthcare if needed.

As I returned to Delhi, I was greeted by a stunning transformation at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The airport had undergone a remarkable beautification in preparation for the upcoming G20 summit. Lush greenery, vibrant floral arrangements, and artistic installations adorned the terminals, creating an atmosphere of grandeur and sophistication. The attention to detail was evident in every corner, from the elegant banners welcoming world leaders to the meticulously manicured gardens. It was a testament to India's dedication to hosting international events with grace and style. The airport's newfound splendor served as a fitting introduction to the vibrant and dynamic city of Delhi, leaving a lasting impression on all who passed through its gates.

My journey back from Jordan was filled with reflection on the incredible experiences and memories I had gathered during my trip. The in-flight medical incident served as a reminder of the importance of passenger well-being and the swift response of airline staff during emergencies. Older passengers, in particular, should take precautions, stay hydrated, and be well-prepared for any unexpected health issues while traveling.
