A trip to Japan involved roughly 15 kilometres of walking each day, making everyday movement feel built into the experience.
You walk a lot when you travel in Japan.
Looking at my watch stats after the trip, I found that I averaged roughly 15 kilometres of walking per day. The daily distances varied, but over eleven days the average came to just under 15 kilometres.
It makes sense when you think about how a trip there works. There is walking through stations, along streets, between attractions, and around neighbourhoods. Even when using trains, a lot of the experience happens on foot.
It made me wonder how much this kind of everyday movement contributes to health and fitness in Japan. Walking did not feel like a separate exercise session during the trip. It was simply part of getting around.
