Daily Note

Mental math can be a surprisingly engaging exercise, especially when it sneaks up on you during routine activities. Recently, I found myself doing some intriguing calculations during a post-swim shower. It was a fun and stimulating experience, and it reminded me of the importance of keeping our mental faculties sharp.

The Swimming Routine

Swimming is an integral part of my fitness routine. I regularly swim 1 km, 1.52 km or 2 km, splitting my laps to measure stamina and efficiency. A couple of days ago, I completed 50 laps (1 km) in 23:37 minutes and the total 76 laps (1.52 km) in 36:00 minutes. After the swim, as I was showering, I decided to calculate how my performance compared between the two splits.

Reflections on Mental Math

Completing these calculations mentally while taking a shower was both challenging and rewarding. It highlighted several benefits of engaging in mental math:

I encourage you to try integrating mental math into your daily activities. Whether it’s during a workout, while cooking, or even in the shower, take a few moments to challenge your brain. The experience of calculating swimming splits during a shower was a refreshing reminder of the joys and benefits of mental math. It’s an excellent way to keep the brain sharp, improve cognitive functions, and boost confidence. Whether during a workout, commute, or everyday tasks, incorporating mental math into your routine can have significant positive impacts on your mental agility and overall well-being.
